Make a Good First Impression at Job Fairs

San Bernardino, CA (PRWEB) September 18, 2006

People want great local jobs. The Inland Empire Diversity Career & Job Fair is coming to town, with over 2,000 jobs. It’s where one can find the perfect job.

That first impression is important. “The sure way to get the job is to back up your skills and experience with an impression that leaves no doubt in anyone’s mind that you will be a great employee,” said Dolores Armstead vice president of the Inland Empire African-American Chamber of Commerce.

With the Inland Empire Diversity Career and Job Fair coming to Riverside on Oct. 4, the Diversity Fair’s sponsors offer tips for how to be most successful in a job search.

Dress for success. Although most Inland Empire companies have a “business casual” or even less formal dress code, the Inland Empire Diversity Career & Job Fair organizers recommend job fair participants dress for the job fair as if they were going on an interview with the most glamorous company they could imagine.

This should be dresses or skirt suits with a conservative necklace for women, and ties with jackets and dress slacks, or a suit, for men. Shoes should be heels of 1 to 3 inches for women, and any type of leather dress shoe except sandals for men.

Dressing this way may be far more formal than what is expected on the job, especially for one seeking warehouse or outdoor work. But the organizers of this diversity job fair cater to a diverse work force, including African-Americans, Hispanics, Asians, Native Americans, women, the disabled and people over 40.

“ We invite everyone to attend and we want everyone to look their best,” said Armstead.

“With and unemployment rate for Blacks and Latinos at two to three times that of the general population,’ said Armstead. “You need an extra advantage to make great impression, the Inland Empire Diversity Career & Job Fairs gives you that edge with companies that want to hire people like you!”

Be careful how you behave. This is especially important for young job seekers who come with friends. If conversation between booths or while taking a break from job seeking is loud or laced with slang or profanity, this makes a worse impression on recruiters than dressing sloppy.

While there, refrain from chewing gum or smoking. Smoking won’t be allowed inside the building, but if one has smoked tobacco before entering, the aroma that follows will leave a bad impression on recruiters.

Sell yourself. When meeting Job Fair recruiters, prospective employees should shake their hand, make eye contact and introduce themselves. Speaking clearly and confidently, they should tell them something about why they would be a fabulous employee Be ready to answer any questions the recruiters have, as they may have come to the Diversity Job Fair prepared to do at least a mini-interview.

Before you leave the booth, job seekes should ask the potential employer when they can start the job. Doing this makes a bold assumption that the job is theirs, but it’s exactly how some past Diversity Job Fair participants were hired.

Ask for the recruiters’ business cards. Job seekers need these so they can write thank you letters to the recruiter for meeting, which is another step that will help them stand out from the crowd.

It helps if they have done some research about the company, so you understand somewhat who they are looking for. This can be done by visiting the company if it’s local, or by talking to other people who have worked there, If the company is out of town, a quick way to find more about them is to look for their website on the Internet.

If not before the Inland Empire Diversity Job Fair, job seekers should be sure to do this research on any company that invites them to come in for an interview. At the interview stage, knowing something about the company is crucial in today’s competitive job market.

Bring 40 resumes. While the first impression one gives a job recruiter is important, it most likely isn’t up to that recruiter whom to hire. A resume must also make a good impression.

Since the recruiters give resumes to others in their company who weren’t at the job fair, the resume becomes the basis for another first impression. So a resume should be free from folds in the paper or other damage. It should be typed on a letterhead (use computer templates to make one of these) and not have any typographical errors.

Carry the resumes in a portfolio or a report keeper in a solid, conservative color. These items are available inexpensively at office supply stores.

While some people looking for a job want to perform a certain specialty, there could be more than one employer looking for someone in that career field. And for those who are open to more kinds of work, Diversity Career Fairs are much more effective in a job search than blasting resumes blindly via e-mail.
