President Barack Obama may be the leader of the free world, but according to the “Dog Whisperer” Cesar Millan, he is getting walked all over by the First Dog, Bo. USA Today reports that Millan told CBS’ Sunday Morning that Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush are making mistakes with their dogs Bo and Barney, respectively; they are letting the dogs walk them instead of the other way around. CBS news reporter Leslie Stahl asked Millan if he had seen President Obama with his new dog Bo, to which Millan replied, “I’ve seen them day one, and definitely day one was not a good scene. The dog, Bo, was in front of the president of the United States.”
If it seems odd that Millan’s criticism is for the dog owner, President Obama, rather than his dog Bo that is because the “Dog Whisperer” takes an unconventional approach to training in which he trains the owner too! In his latest book, Cesar’s Rules: Your Way to Train a Well-Behaved Dog, Millan provides a comprehensive guide to all dog training options, so that dog owners can pick the unique approach that works for them. In an excerpt from his new book obtained by TODAYshow.com, the celebrity trainer explains, “People don’t usually seek me out when their dog won’t sit on command. They beg me for help when their dog is destroying their life. In the opening of my show, Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan on the National Geographic Channel, I always say, ‘I rehabilitate dogs; I train people.'”
Millan hasn’t been dubbed the Dr. Phil for dogs for no reason. He dreamed of moving to California and becoming a dog trainer while growing up in rural Mexico, watching TV shows like The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin and Lassie. When he was 21 years old, Millan moved to San Diego and began working as a dog trainer. He quickly garnered a reputation for being able to tame even the most rambunctious and difficult pets and started a freelance dog rehabilitation company on the side. Millan began training the pooch of celebrity couple Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, and other celebrities followed.
After opening his first Dog Psychology Center, Millan was profiled by the Los Angeles Times and scored his very own series on the National Geographic channel. The Dog Whisperer debuted on the National Geographic channel in 2004 and was an instant hit. On the show, Millan pays house calls to clients who are under crisis with their pets. Fans without pooch problems can see Cesar Milan without asking him to make a house call, as the “Dog Whisperer” is currently in the midst of a speaking tour. Cesar Millan – The Dog Whisperer tickets are available see Millan in cities like Morristown, N.J.; Richmond, BC; Hamilton, ON; London, ON; Edmonton, AB and Englewood, N.J. through February 2011.
Millan recently used his celebrity for a good cause, by teaming up with actress Michelle Forbes, best known for her role on HBO’s True Blood, to encourage pet adoption through an event held by Last Chance for Animals (LCA). Held on Puppy Mill Awareness Day (Sept. 18), the event took place at the Tar Pits in Los Angeles and sought to raise awareness about the abusive conditions in commercial breeding facilities, otherwise known as puppy mills. Dog Magazine reports that Mad TV’s Debra Wilson, Los Angeles Postmaster Mark Anderson, West Hollywood City Council Member Jeffrey Prang, L.A. Animal Services General Manager Brenda Barnette, and L.A. Council Member Tom La Bonge also participated in the event.
