Doherty Employment Group Celebrates 35 years of excellence in employment services

Doherty Employment Group, widely recognized as an industry-leading staffing and human resources outsourcing company, is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year.

In April 1980, Timothy Doherty founded the company with little more than the financial backing of his parents’ home mortgage, two employees (including his mother) and the dream of running a business that would serve as a solution to the pains of the current economic recession.

“The company was started in the midst of a terrible recession, when companies were likely to cut back on temporary employees,” says chairman and founder Tim Doherty. “At age 26, I didn’t know much about running a business, but despite those obstacles, the business model just made sense.”

Doherty then and now



In 1982, Doherty installed its first computer system, making it one of the first organizations in the industry to take advantage of technology for candidate search and retrieval. Three years later in 1985, Inc. Magazine named the business as one of the 500 Fastest-Growing Private Companies in the United States. Each year brought new challenges and triumphs, which ultimately fueled a drive for success that would lead the company to expand business into the Midwest and navigate through a second major economic downturn in 2008.

Since its inception, Doherty has grown to be Minnesota’s largest staffing firm and one of the Midwest’s largest and most experienced providers of employment services, including contract and temporary staffing, direct-hire recruiting and human resources services outsourcing. In 2014, Doherty was named a recipient of the Minnesota Business Ethics Award and recognized as a Top Workplace by the Star Tribune.
