Keeping in Shape with Michael Jai White

Michael Jai White is an action movie star who has done some incredible work in movies over the last two decades. Yet, one can’t help but wonder how the action star stays in such great shape.

Take the movie Black Dynamite, a 1970s-style blaxploitation action film about the legendary super crime fighter called Black Dynamite. The 2009 movie is a parody of the original blaxploitation films of the 70s, like Trouble Man and Dolemite. Even though the movie makes fun of these movies, you can’t help but notice White’s captivating physic as a result of intensive training for more than twenty years in martial arts. He owns six styles of black belts: Tae Kwon Do, Shotokan, Kobud, Tang Soo Do, Goju Ryu, Kyokushin and Wushu.

As White said in an interview: “The cornerstone of martial arts is that it teaches you discipline. The body gets conditioned as a result of what your mind is doing.  When you build that discipline and focus, you can shut out anything that you need to. With discipline, you can accomplish anything.”

In 1999, White starred with Jean-Claude Van Damme in a science fiction action film, Universal Solider: The Return. To get an idea of how hard White worked to stay in top shape for the action film, he ate primarily protein, drank three gallons of water a day and worked out between scenes on the set. White didn’t lift weights for this film; he practiced martial arts moves. He says weight bulks you up while martial arts keep you trim and flexible.

White received some critical acclaim portraying Mike Tyson in HBO’s 1995 biopic Tyson and also for his work in the 1997 action packed film Spawn. Then, in Steven Seagal’s Exit Wounds, White put Seagal to disgrace with some of his fancy martial arts moves.

The reason White can hold his own in these action movies is because he has trained with some of the top Black Belt Hall of Famers: Joe Lewis, Bill Wallace, Benny Urquidez, and Gene LeBell. He thrives for more knowledge of martial arts, and thinks putting on a white belt versus a black belt is “looking forward to learning something new.”

White knows the importance of growing as a martial artist and will not limit himself. “If I take the bait and concentrate on my physical gifts, I do myself a disservice. A true martial artist tries to be the best that he can be, regardless of what anyone else is doing. I know that is what has gotten me where I am, but I don’t consider myself to be anywhere near to where I want to wind up.”

White looks pretty darn good in Black Dynamite. Even though the movie was released back in 2009, it still has a strong following and trends regularly on Twitter.
